STI Screening Q & A

What is STI screening?

STI screenings are diagnostic tests that screen for the presence of STIs, infections spread via sexual contact (vaginal, anal, and oral sexual intercourse). Some STIs are curable, while others can be managed by taking medications long term. Dominique helps determine which STI you may have based on your lifestyle, symptoms, and STI test results.

What are examples of STIs?

Common STIs include:

  • Gonorrhea
  • Chlamydia
  • Syphilis
  • Human papillomavirus (HPV)
  • Hepatitis A, B, and C
  • Herpes
  • Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
  • Trichomoniasis
  • Vaginitis

It’s possible to have more than one STI at the same time (co-infection).

Am I a candidate for STI screening?

Consider STI screening if you develop one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Painful urination or bowel movements
  • Genital, oral, or anal sores or blisters
  • Genital or anal itching
  • Pain during sex
  • Abdominal or pelvic pain
  • Unusual or smelly vaginal, anal, or penis discharge
  • Bleeding between periods or heavy menstrual bleeding in women
  • Testicular swelling or pain in men
  • Swollen glands in the neck
  • Genital or anal warts

You might also experience chills, fever, night sweats, muscle aches, fatigue, vomiting, diarrhea, a rash, or headaches because of an STI.

To determine which STIs you may be at risk of, Dominique reviews your sexual history, medical history, lifestyle, and symptoms. She may complete a virtual physical exam if necessary.

What happens during STI screening?

STI testing consists of a tissue swab, blood test, fluid sample from skin sores, or urine test. You might be able to complete the test at home or in a lab. Dominique reviews the results to determine if you have an STI. She discusses treatment options for a positive outcome, such as taking antibiotics or antiviral medications and making lifestyle modifications.

How often do I need STI screenings?

If you’re sexually active, you may want to schedule STI screening annually or more often (every 3-6 months) if you have sex with multiple, unknown, or high-risk partners. Schedule a screening for you and a partner before having sex for the first time.

How can I reduce my risk of STIs?

Reduce your risk of contracting an STI by avoiding sex, having sex with just one mutually monogamous partner who has tested negative for STIs, or always wearing a condom during sexual intercourse. Never share needles.
