Diabetes Q & A

How does diabetes affect women’s health?

Diabetes is a chronic disease that develops when your body doesn’t properly convert sugar from your diet into energy.

Women with type 1 diabetes don’t produce the insulin hormone to regulate blood glucose (sugar) levels. Women with type 2 diabetes can’t make sufficient amounts of insulin to maintain healthy glucose levels. Gestational diabetes causes high blood sugar levels during pregnancy, which can lead to type 2 diabetes after childbirth.

Unmanaged diabetes can negatively affect many aspects of a woman's wellness, including menstruation, pregnancy, and vaginal health. The disease can also increase risk factors for cardiovascular disease, depression, and vision loss.

Murry Medical specializes in diabetes management for adult women aged 18 and over. Dominique focuses on lifestyle changes and other holistic strategies to address type 2 diabetes and prediabetes. She also offers prescription insulin and other medications to manage type 1 and gestational diabetes.

What are the symptoms of diabetes in women?

Diabetes can cause several symptoms that are common among women and men, including:

  • Excessive thirst
  • Frequent urination
  • Blurry vision
  • Unintentional weight loss

In women, diabetes can also trigger menstrual cycle changes, urinary tract infections, and yeast infections. Pregnancy complications that can occur due to uncontrolled diabetes include preeclampsia and stillbirth.

Older women might also experience complications managing their diabetes as they near the end of their childbearing years due to menopause-related hormone changes.

If you have any diabetes symptoms or are at high risk for diabetes due to your personal or family medical history, lifestyle, or diet, Murry Medical offers management services you can benefit from. Dominique requests blood work to check your glucose levels and identify which diabetes treatment is appropriate.

How is diabetes managed?

If you’re a woman with type 1 diabetes, you need daily insulin to regulate your blood sugar levels. Dominique can also teach you how to monitor your glucose levels at home to ensure treatment is working well.

Your treatment plan for type 2 diabetes may initially focus on lifestyle and diet changes. Murry Medical also provides medically supervised weight loss programs to help you achieve and maintain a healthy body weight to support healthy blood glucose levels.

If you need additional treatment, Dominique prescribes medications to regulate blood sugar. She continues to monitor your glucose levels and your overall health
